Kei Kurono is standing by himself of a subway station platform, checking out the models that are in the magazine he has picked up. He doesn't like the world and the world doesn't like him, which is exactly why he doesn't care when an old hobo falls down on the tracks near him. He sees his old school friend Masaru Kato standing next to him looking rather nervous and could not have predicted what would happen next, Kato got down on the tracks and started to help the hobo back up onto the platform. When Kato called for help, Kurono found himself moving without wanting to and before he knew it he was down on the tracks as well. Just as they finally help the hobo up onto the platform they realise the train is coming in and they will have to make a run for it, but what they don't realise is that it is the express train and they stand no chance. Just as they die they are transported to a mysterious room, with strangers inside... just what is going on? (translation)
As Kurono and Kato find themselves in an apartment in Tokyo after their apparent deaths, they begin to wonder what is going on, and who the other people in the room are. Some of them claim that this is heaven, and they are all dead while others claim that they are all still alive. The one thing they all know is that there is no escaping from the apartment as all windows and doors are locked and unbreakable. They are all trapped in there together, with one mysterious item adorning the main room, a large black ball, just what is that thing and who just landed in Kurono's lap... naked.
A beautiful and naked girl is transported into the apartment and ontop of Kurono, he takes the opportunity to have a good fondle of her and as the rest of the group crowd round they notice that she has slit wrists. They agree that she has committed suicide in the bath and had her arms up on the side when she did it, which is why she has arrived in the room with them all. One of the yakuza members in the room decides that he will have his way with her, but not before Kato steps in and stops him. As chaos descends on the group, the big black ball in the middle of the room begins to play music, and it grabs everyone's attention. It is interesting to note in this chapter that the song playing from the Gantz ball is from a Japanese Exercise Program broadcast after World War II, something which an allusion to the novel 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' by George Orwell - a novel that shares many core elements of theme and suspense with Gantz
As the group are still fighting, the black ball begins to talk, spewing out information about a strange looking creature that they must defeat. The naked girl is still in the corner, being paid a little more attention that she would like by the dog, before Kato throws her his jacket and tells her to put it on before he does the same thing as the dog. The ball expands, squashing Kurono, and gives every member of the group equipment to 'fight' the character that they had previously seen. As they all wonder what is going on, people start dissapearing.
As the rest of the group start to dissapear, Kurono realises it would be better for him if he wore the suit that the mysterious ball had provided him with. He doesn't have enough time to put it on and ends up being transported naked but luckily has his suit in his hands. As he puts it on, the rest of the group arrive and they are filled in by Nishino that they must hunt down the previously indentified alien and kill him with the weapons they have been provided. They all split up and soon the businessman has found the onion alien walking out of his front door, what will happen next?
As they group catch the alien they begin to manhandle it, resulting in violent vomiting and the alien being able to get away from them all. As they give chase Kurono is too busy checking out the naked girl and thinking about how she would make the perfect girlfriend for him. The noise of the chase distracts him though, as the rest of the group is trying hard to catch up with the onion alien as it screams while running.
The old man who claimed that the group was in heaven is walking to the station to get home when he steps on a piece of glass and realises that he actually is alive after all but not before the chip is his brain realises that he is going out of the area in which the alien is in and blows his head clean off. As the group finally catch the alien, he responds by lashing out at one of the yakuza men with a knife, which prompts the rest of the group to shoot him with the weapons provided. Kato shouts to them to stop, but it is too late.
The group watch as the alien squirms in pain and finally rips apart where it has been shot by each of them, Kato runs up to them and berates them for shooting first and not giving the alien a chance to live. The group talk about how the thing was inhuman and whether they have been in a TV show all along. They think everything will be calm now their have completed their mission, or so they think.
As the group congratule themselves on a job well done, they realise that they are invisible to the public and that they might actually be dead. While still discussing this possibility they are approached by a large figure, who they think is the producer of the TV show they are supposedly on but soon realise that it is the much larger father of the onion alien they had just killed.
As Kurono and Kishimoto realise that there is a boundary that they can move within, the rest of the group see the yakuza member face up to the father of the onion alien and headbutt him, little does he know that the alien's head is like concrete. As the alien is enraged by the violence he grips the man's head and the group shoot at him, although the alien uses the man as a shield and the yakuza member has seconds to realise he has been shot before exploding.
