Night Shift Nurses is a series of hentai anime that was originally produced and released in Japan in 2000, it was released as 10 OVAs on DVD, two of which are clip episodes featuring scenes from the others (these are episode five and episode ten). Due to the Japanese laws on pornography, the original releases in the series' home country were censored. In 2002 the first five episodes were licensed by Central Park Media (Anime18) and brought to the USA on DVD fully uncensored. The series is famous, both in it's home country and abroad, for having the most extreme content such as scat, BDSM, watersports and more. Fans of extreme hentai porn have been shocked at how hardcore the content in the series is, and some claim it is one of the most extreme productions in the last decade. The original Japanese version was released in 2000, with the translated version released in 2002.
The series begins as you are introduced to gynecologist Ryuji Hirasaka as he takes up his new position at the Saint Juliana hospital. Ten years ago he had left the medical profession entirely after an 'incident' with a young woman who went by the name of Narumi Jinguji (he raped her), and as he arrives for his first day back to the profession he discovers that the person in charge of the entire hospital is none other than Narumi herself. He is informed that he has been brought back to help train nurses, but not in the usual way. He has to teach them how to 'pleasure' certain people who come to stay at the hospital, and as he realises what his job will entail he quickly signs up, in the form of an 'oral' agreement with Narumi.
The english producers cut around thirteen to fourteen minutes of the series when they were translating it for American release. The edits were made mainly to avoid troubles with some US state laws that legislate against urination and scat (excretion) in pornography. The translations made by the production company reflected the cuts that were made, which meant that some of the original speech was edited in order to not confuse the viewer.
In episode one, four scenes were removed that clocked in at around three minutes in total. These scenes included scat (defecation) and watersports (urination). Although the amount of content they removed from the disc was minimal, they actually added content to make up for the lacking amount. This can be seen when Dr Ryuji Hirasaki is waiting for the elevator to arrive with Ren, in the original Japanese edition this small scene was almost completely stationary and silent, although in the translated version Nurse Hiraku runs past them chasing a number of children informing them to slow down in the corridors. The scene where Nurse Ren urinates over Hirasaka's hand and chair as he brings her to climax after fingering her anally and as he then throws her onto the floor is edited in a number of ways. They add the lines "good and salty" to what Hirasaka says in order for it to seem as if he has had his fingers in her vagina, which is more acceptable. The line "nasty whore" is also out of context due to the editing, as it does not seem as obscene as the original scene is. A scene in Hirasaka's lab is cut as brown fluid is seen leaking from Ren's anus, as he proceeds to administer a pleasurable enema to her, more cuts are made later in this scene as the entire contents of the enema are shown (even though no fecal matter is visible). The fourth and final change made to the first episode is almost an entire scene from the episode that has been cut, as Hirasaka rapes Ren with Naoya she begins to enjoy it and they start to have anal sex, fluid and urine begins to flow freely from Ren, accompanied by close ups of her genitals. This is completely removed.
In episode two, the last piece of the episode was entirely removed which meant the loss of around four whole minutes of content from the episode. The plus side of this for viewers is the fact that none of the other scenes in the episode were modified or edited in any way. The removed content from this episode included anal torture, scat (defecation) and urination. These cuts can change the way that viewers see some of the characters featured, including Hirasaka who seems less sadistic and brutal and it makes Nurse Remi seems more willing to be used as a piece of meat that she was in the original version. The scene was most probably removed due to the graphic portrayal of Remi's anus buckling under the pressure of the liquid that Hirasaka had pumped in, as she defecates explosively around the room that they are both in.
Episode three is arguably the most heavily modified scene out of all of the episodes that have currently been released. Six to seven minutes of content was deleted, not all of it being scat or urination as many would have thought. There are two scenes affected the most, one of which is almost completely removed. The first of which removes Hirasaka using a hose to give Ren an enema in a garden fountain at night, Ren drinking his urine while orally pleasuring him, Hirasaka anally penetrating Ren while she urinates and more urine play during sex. The second scene, which is regarded as one of the most extreme in the series, features nurse Ako Fujisawa (a virgin) having a used tampon from her own vagina forced up her nose and then Ryuji Hirasaka ejaculating on her face, inserting glass marbles into both her vagina and anus. Much of this was cut by the American production company in charge of the translation. The third scene, which some say tops the preceeding one in obscenity, shows Hirasaka raping Ako and administering her an enema with marbles still inside her, the scene ends as Hirasaka has an orgasm inside of her and then kicks the chair she is tied to onto the floor, with it she falls and both the marbles and the enema fluid squirt out from inside of her. This is almost completely removed, leaving some of the lines before and after sounding confusing to viewers as to what has occured.
The English translated DVD of the series features the original script, credits for the cast and crew, an art gallery, a documentary on anime and hentai, trailers and links to sites related to the series, or that fans of the series might enjoy. The menus have all also been carefully redone and are some of the best quality to appear on a hentai DVD in years.
Many fans have argued that some of the edits made for the US version of the series were largely unnecessary and were a result of the company overprotecting itself. These arguements are based on the fact that more extreme content in hentai has been released in the US before and no legal trouble has arisen from it. Many fans often use the title Shusaku Replay in their argument, that it was a lot more extreme than Night Shift Nurses and had no problems with any laws in the US, which backs up their claim of Central Park Media being overprotective of themselves.
Unedited versions are available in Japan, under the original title "Yakin Byoto Karte" although these are censored, they do offer some episodes that were never issued for American released. There are also bootleg VCDs (Video CDs) from Hong Kong featuring the first three episodes that are a lot cheaper than the official releases, but they have hardcoded Chinese subs and are low quality, they are also still censored. Fans have commented that a German release of the series may be a chance to see an uncensored and unedited edition, although no news relating to any such release has been given.
